Studying Tafsir | Ali Imran/3:8, A Prayer to be Given Determination

There is a prayer mentioned in the Al-Qur'an Surah Ali Imran Verse 8, which we can practice in our daily lives when we face situations such as:

1. When we feel uncertain about making important decisions.

 2. Before starting an exam or a challenging job.

Al-Qur'an surah Āli ‘Imrān ayat 8

رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوْبَنَا بَعْدَ اِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِنْ لَّدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً ۚاِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْوَهَّاب

(They pray) "Oh our Lord, do not deviate our hearts after when You have guided us and bestow us the mercy from your side. truthfully, you are the bestower.

(Mereka berdoa,) “Wahai Tuhan kami, janganlah Engkau jadikan hati kami berpaling setelah Engkau berikan petunjuk kepada kami dan anugerahkanlah kepada kami rahmat dari hadirat-Mu. Sesungguhnya Engkau Maha Pemberi.

The essence of this prayer is:

 1. Request that the heart not turn away from God's guidance after it has been given.

 2. Ask for mercy from God.

 3. Acknowledge God as a generous Giver.

 

MUFRADAT & IRAB

-  رَبَّنَا "Our Lord!

رب: اسم مفرد، منادى بأداة نداء محذوفة، مرفوع

نا: اسم ضمير متصل، مضاف إليه، مجرور مبني على السكون

جمع: أرْبَابٌ، رُبُوبٌ.

 - لَا (Do) not

لا: حرف نهي. 

 - تُزِغْ deviate

تزغ: فعل مضارع، مجزوم، الفاعل اسناده أنت. 

أزاغَ يُزيغ، أزِغْ، مصدر إِزَاغَةٌ، فهو مُزيغ، والمفعول مُزاغ

 - قُلُوبَنَا our hearts

قلوب: فعل جمع تكثير، مفعول به، منصوب بالفتحة.

نا: اسم ضمير متصل، مضاف إليه، مجرور مبني على السكون. 

قَلْب [مفرد]: ج قُلُوب (لغير المصدر).

مصدر قلَبَ.

قلَبَ يَقلِب، اِقْلِبْ، مصدر قَلْبٌ، فهو قالِب، والمفعول مَقْلوب

قَلَبَ - يقْلب : 1. memutar , berpaling , berbalik , terbalik , bolak - balik , jungkir - balik ; 2. membalikkan , menelungkupkan ; 3. merobohkan , merubuhkan , menumbangkan

 - بَعْدَ after

بعد: ظرف زمان

 - إِذْ [when]

اذ: ظرف زمان

 - هَدَيْتَنَا You (have) guided us,

هديت: فعل ماض، مبني، الفاعل اسناده أنت

نا: اسم ضمير متصيل، مفعول به، منصوب ومبني بالسكون

هدَى يَهدي، اهْدِ، مصدر هُدىً، هَدْيٌ، هِدَايَةٌ، فهو هادٍ، والمفعول مَهدِيّ

 - وَهَبْ and bestow

و: حرف عطف

هب: فعل امر، الفاعل اسناده انت

وهَبَ يهَب، هَبْ، مصدر وَهْبٌ، هِبَةٌ، فهو واهِب، والمفعول مَوْهوب

 - لَنَا (for) us

ل: حرف جر

نا: اسم ضمير متصيل، اسناده نحن، مضاف إليه، مجرور ومبني بالسكون. 

 - مِنْ from

من: حرف جر

 - لَدُنْكَ Your side

لدن: ظرف زمان و مكان

ك: إسم ضمير متصيل، إسناده أنت، مضاف إليه، مجرور و مبني بالفتحة

ظرف زمان ومكان بمعنى عند

لَدُِنْ : عِندَ : di sisi , pada

 - رَحْمَةً mercy.

رحمة: إسم مفرد، مفعول به، منصوب بالفتحة

رَحْمَة [مفرد]: ج رَحَمات (لغير المصدر) ورَحْمات (لغير المصدر)

مصدر رحِمَ

رحِمَ يَرحَم، اِرْحَمْ، مصدر رَحْمَةٌ، مَرْحَمَةٌ، رُحُمٌ، فهو راحِم، والمفعول مَرْحوم

 - إِنَّكَ Truthfully you,

إن: حرف نصب، إن وأخواتها.

ك: إسم ضمير متصيل، إسم إن، منصوب و مبني بالفتحة.

 - أَنْتَ You

أنت: إسم ضمير متصيل، توكيد، منصوب ومبني بالفتحة.

 - الْوَهَّابُ (are) the Bestower.

الوهاب: إسم مفرد، خبر إن، مرفوع بالضمة.

وَهّاب [مفرد]: صيغة مبالغة من وهَبَ.

الوهَّاب: اسم من أسماء الله الحسنى.

TAFSIR

This verse contains lessons that can be taken from the perspective of aqidah, akhlaq and fiqh:

1. Aqidah (belief): This verse teaches belief to Allah SWT and understanding that only He gives guidance to humans. This reminds us to always depend on Allah in our lives and believe in His oneness.

2. Akhlaq (ethics and morals): In this verse, we are taught not to turn away from Allah SWT's guidance.  This shows the importance of steadfastness in faith and maintaining good morals after receiving His instructions.  This verse also teaches humility in prayer to Allah.

3. Fiqh (Islamic law): Although this verse does not directly discuss Islamic law, it highlights the importance of praying to Allah SWT to ask for His guidance and mercy.  In the context of jurisprudence, this underlines the importance of prayer in the daily life of a Muslim and the recognition that Allah is a generous Giver.

Conclusion: This verse teaches us to stick to Allah's guidance, maintain good morals, and pray to Him with humility.
